For many years, students were lined up in rows in their classroom. One desk behind the other. Every desk an island. Students were taught to be quiet and work independently. And although, students were normally in classrooms of 20 or more pupils, they were only allowed to talk when being called upon. They were not to talk out of turn, and their conversation was directed at the instructor when they were allowed to talk. Students were attending class physically with other students, but they did not form groups and work together on projects or problems.
In the year 2025, collaboration will not only be a regular site, it will be critically important to the learning environment. Students will need to know how to interact with others, and not simply rely on their own ideas or answers.
